Small town in Alaska drags everyone out of bed to make sure a plane can land and rescue a child in need of urgent medical attention.

I believe there is more good in this world than we give it credit for.

When I was in the Army, stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana, around 1987, one of the guys had a seizure and had to be medevac airlifted . They needed an LZ for the chopper at an intersection way out in the range territory. I’d recently been relieved of duty as the company commander’s driver, so I knew my way around really well. I was out with the new chump CO’s driver and I heard the talk on the radio that they needed the LZ and I radioed and got permission to use actual headlights and we went to the battalion HQ and got a handful of chem-lights and went out to the intersection, which was just a couple of blacktop — “hardball” — roads. I had zero idea how an LZ ought to be set up, so I just made a circle of the chemlights around the intersection and put the last one down right in the center and that Huey landed right in the middle and I get sort of teary with excitement just typing this story. They got Danny to the hospital and he was fine.

I was awarded the Army Achievement Medal for my actions that night and since I was also the company clerk, I typed up my own award citation.

That s**t was f***ing COOL!

Thanks. It was very exciting and very satisfying. The first sergeant, whom I really liked, only fussed at me about it because I was actually supposed to be delivering reports when I was out being heroic. Took charge of the situation, I did.

While there are assholes everywhere, anonymity does seem to encourage terrible behavior, and living in a place where everyone knows your name, where you work, and what you do for fun does create a certain level of social accountability you don't get in a larger population center

This. When everyone knows you, you adapt by growing empathy for everyone.

These are the stories that keep me from being completely cynical and heartless.
